Safety first for AMETEK SMP as Reading Alloys reaches 550,000 hours with no lost work day incidents

Reading Alloys, part of AMETEK Specialty Metal Products (SMP), is putting safety first with its recent accomplishment of accumulating 550,000 hours worked without recording a single Lost Work Day Incident. This impressive figure means that the Pennsylvania-based master alloys and powdered metal specialist has gone more than two years without any onsite accidents or injuries that have resulted in staff needing to take time off from work to recover.

Marc Vanderwal, Director of Environment, Health & Safety at AMETEK SMP said of the achievement; “I am proud of the efforts the Reading Alloys team has taken to reach such a noteworthy accomplishment in their support of our journey to ZERO injuries. It is a true testament to focusing on safety becoming a value, not just a priority. I look forward to Reading Alloys reaching the next milestone of a year without ANY recordable incidents.”

The business applauded its achievement at a special Safety Celebration Day on February 27, 2019. As well as food and prizes, all employees received commemorative hoodies emblazoned with the motto ‘Safety Starts With Me’ in recognition of everyone keeping safety at the forefront of their minds. The event also recognized a series of successful safety initiatives that have been introduced by Reading Alloys. These included formalized risk assessments and hazard reviews, significant capital investments, a behavior-based safety program and an improved contractor safety scheme. A Safety Steering Committee was also set up to oversee a comprehensive review of safety across the Reading Alloys site, as well as running audits and identifying opportunities for improvements to working practices.

Alexia Pursley, HR Manager at Reading Alloys, added; “I believe we owe our safety success to our culture of involvement. We have several employee-driven committees involved in various initiatives throughout the workplace. We also incentivize employee involvement through providing recognition for safety, quality, or process improvement recommendations. Our goal is to foster and expand employee engagement throughout our workplace and beyond in 2019.”
